V Kingston Diamonds B - 12th December 2009
**TAKEN FROM KINGSTON DIAMONDS WEBSITE**
Kingston Diamonds 7-1 Whitley Squaws
The Diamonds were very apprehensive about playing Whitley Bay, as they were a completely unknown quantity. Their stats showed that they had the firepower and they had picked up some quality players as a result of Billinghams demise. With regards to the Diamonds, they were to face the Squaws short-handed missing Kirsten Deighten whilst she serves her match ban, Charlotte Cook due to a back injury and Becky Craig through a miscommunication.
From the drop of the puck it was obvious that the Squaws were a stronger side than the previous weeks opponents but the Diamonds were not phased with Lindsey Nicklin managing to set up Elaine Kennington for an early goal! Shortly afterwards Whitley’s goalie was caught out again by a full ice clearance from Sue Hemmerman. The play was pretty much end to end but the luck was going the Diamonds way with Beth Davis setting up Elaine for her second goal in the final minutes of the first period.
The Diamonds started the second period with a 3 goals to nil advantage but this was no comfort to Dawn as the Whitley girls put on even more pressure but yet again the Diamonds created more luck allowing Lindsey Nicklin to score an un assisted goal. The Squaws were relentless and pinned the Diamonds in their defensive end, to make things worse Elaine Kennington fell awkwardly needing to sit off. Whitley’s hard work paid off with a goal assisted by former Diamond Jenny Carter and scored by Sarah Smith. The period ended at 4 – 1. Whitley’s bad luck was not limited to the score line though. Whilst climbing over the barrier during the break, one of the Squaws fell dislocating her shoulder. To both teams amazement the Ambulance arrived within 2 minutes, demonstrating that there are some advantages to playing at Grimsby!
After a lengthy break the third period commenced at the same pace as the previous two. Full credit to the Squaws, regardless of the score line they continued to exert pressure on the Diamonds defence, however when the Diamonds did break clear they made their efforts count with Beth Davis bagging two goals the first assisted by Elaine Kennington and the second by Lindsey Nicklin. The final goal of the game was yet another Diamond one, although credited to Gemma Ferguson and assisted by Elaine Kennington the reality was probably the inverse. Regardless the Diamonds were delighted with their biggest win of the season with the final score of 7 – 1. This also put the Girls top of the League by one point.
For the second week running veteran Dawn Dickinson picked up the sprit of the game probably because she needed the drink having faced 44 shots compared to Whitley’s 34.
